Centro-matic

By some counts, the number of Centro-matic or related releases is in the hundreds at this point; three EPs, a soundtrack cut and a cassingle were released while you read this—each one a surprise and revelation. The band of 15 years, comprised of Will Johnson (songwriter, singer, multi-instrumentalist), Scott Danbom (keyboards, violin, harmonies), Matt Pence (drummer, producer), Mark Hedman (bass, guitar), have just released the latest in their catalog, the visceral record Candidate Waltz.

In addition to contributing to one of the hardest working bands in the country, Centro-matic’s Will Johnson has also been busy playing and touring with Jay Farrar (Son Volt, Gob Iron, Uncle Tupelo), Yim Yames (My Morning Jacket, Monsters of Folk), and Anders Parker (Varnaline, Gob Iron) in celebration of their new album commemorating the 100th birthday of Woodie Gutherie.

The Work

From the band’s latest album, Candidate Waltz, Iso-Residue is the driving force behind Chevrolet’s “Dare to Compare” anthem spot. The instrumental version of the song is as gritty and tough as the ad’s subject matter featuring some of Detroit’s latest innovations.
